Op 90 by Franz S chubert and Three Preludes by George Gershwin\n\n \;\nMarkus Simojoki (15) began playing the piano at the age of five\, and has been taught by\n Richard Shepherd and\, more recently\, Samantha Carrasco. He took up the v iolin when he\nwas six and the viola three years later. He is also fortuna te to have had an organ scholarship\nat St Mary's Portsea for the past two years. He spends most of his free time making music\,\nwhether it be prac tising\, performing or playing in ensembles. Markus was previously a\nmemb er of the National Children’s Orchestra\, and now plays viola in Hampshi re County\nYouth Orchestra and leads the Gosport and Fareham Youth Orchest ra. He enjoys being part\nof school pit bands and ad hoc jazz ensembles on the piano\, and regularly accompanies\nother students. He was delighted t o win the recital prize at last year's Portsmouth Music\nFestival on the p iano\, and gave his first solo recital at the Menuhin Room in Portsmouth o n\nthe 28 th June. Last week\, he was one of the finalists in the Winchest er Young Soloist\ncompetition\, performing Piano Concerto No. 2 by Rachman inov with Winchester Symphony\nOrchestra.
