Tom Jesty – Piano and Becky Rea-Chevis -Flute
Becky and Tom will perform a programme of lesser known works form the flute repertoire. They open with a piece inspired by the stars, Cecile Chaminade’s ‘Serenade aux Etoiles’ This piece beautifully captures the shimmering night sky, and the theme of the stars is taken up again in Barber’s song, Sure on this Shining Night, later in their set.
At the heart of the recital is a sonata by Otar Taktakishvili, a Georgian composer writing in the Soviet period. Taktakishvili was a pupil of Shostakovich, and traces of the style of the older composer can be heard in this work. The first movement tilts between wistful nostalgia and light-hearted, playful material; the second conveys deep pathos; the third is a cheerful and energetic finale.
