And here’s a summary of the programme:
This programme pairs favourites from the guitar repertoire with milestone works from its more recent history. Villa-Lobos and Tárrega are among the most celebrated composers for the guitar, fusing European musical forms with aesthetic influences from South America and beyond. Both able guitarists themselves, their music has long appealed to guitarists for its instinctive suitability to the instrument. Conversely, Takemitsu and Tippett are among legions of 20th-century composers who were drawn to the guitar despite its apparent complexities for the non-specialist. Between them, they transformed the repertoire: in Takemitsu’s case, through his distinctive alternative tunings and use of silence; in Tippett’s case; through his trademark contrapuntal language. An ebullient work by guitarist-composer Andrew York brings the programme to a close.
