A substantial and very appreciative audience greeted the London Concert Brass Trio to the Chapel of St Cross for an engaging lunchtime concert.
This prize-winning group of ex-Royal Academy and Royal College music students demonstrated consummate instrumental skills and a highly professional sense of balance and tonal blend in their chosen repertoire. They played as one unit, always aware of which instrumental part was foreground and which accompaniment. Three imaginative and brilliantly scored contemporary items by an American, Brandon Dicks, punctuated sonorous arrangements of Renaissance and Baroque works by the likes of Gabrieli and Purcell. A C.19 fanfare opened proceedings and their own beautiful version of ‘Danny Boy’ closed the concert.
This was the last of the current series of ‘Perfect Pitch’ lunchtime performances given by mainly young musicians from Winchester and London. It has been a great success drawing regular enthusiastic audiences, partly through the energetic and enterprising organization of a St Cross Brother, Graham Davies, as well as the near-perfect acoustic of the church for such intimate music-making.
